Baranovichi District
The Baranovichi District lies in the north of the region, on the Baranovichi Plain and the slope of the Navahrudak Upland. The Shchara, Myshanka and Issa flow through it; the largest reservoir is Gat. The district took its present shape in 1962 and covers about 2,200 km².
Baranovichi is a city of regional subordination and the district centre. It grew out of a station of the Moscow-Brest railway opened in 1871 and is still a major railway junction. In 1939-1954 Baranovichi was the centre of a region of its own - its map of 1940 is here too.
