Brest District

The Brest District lies in the south-west of the region around Brest and stretches for a hundred kilometres along the Western Bug. Its western and southern borders are state borders, with Poland and Ukraine. The district was formed on 15 January 1940 and has had its present borders since 1950, when the Domachevo District was joined to it. Area: 1,617 km²; urban settlement: Domachevo. The Brest land is the birthplace of Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, the Polish writer and public figure, and of the philosopher Kazimierz Łyszczyński.
